Right on Sammy, so true. All we see on TV now is kids, kids and more kids, tears in their eyes, no water, no food, hard working mothers caring for them. WHERE THE BLOODY HELL ARE THE FATHERS. So called men, just lazy cowards, all the want to do, is use their women as s...t, and baby factories, they should be digging wells, instead of waiting for the (stupid) west to do...
Mamyalynne, //The problem on here is that if you state you find something thought provoking or express some sympathy or empathy for the plight of some you then get the backlash.//
Attempts to temper ill-considered outpourings of sentimentality with a little rationality and practicality also produce a backlash for those who understand that the situation Europe is currently experiencing is unsustainable. We simply cannot take the world and his wife (although, as has been said, wives are very often abandoned to the allegedly life-threatening situations the husbands are fleeing from).
Naomi-I don't know anyone who is suggesting we can "take the world and his wife" so that point is pointless in this context.
I think nearly all of us on AB come into your category of "those who understand that the situation Europe is currently experiencing is unsustainable", but some of us still share concerns for the horrors some people face in the world and respect the rights of people to take peaceful action like this to highlight their concerns without the 'get a job/litter louts' comments.
We are very fortunate indeed to have been born here and have had forebears who helped build this great country but I still think it's reasonable to empathise with youngsters unfortunate enough to be born elsewhere.
I do agree though with Naomi that the sentimentality is often misplaced and putting help in the wrong place (e.g. supporting refugees in Calais, sending rescue boats patrolling the Med) can make things worse not better for other who may try to follow.
fiction-factory, //I don't know anyone who is suggesting we can "take the world and his wife"//
Mrs Merkel has been rather liberal with her invitation – and there are a few here who seem to think that all comers should be welcomed.
//I still think it's reasonable to empathise with youngsters unfortunate enough to be born elsewhere.//
Life never was ‘fair’ and of course it’s reasonable to empathise – but it simply isn’t practical to empathise to the extent of opening our doors to anyone who wants to come here. People are wringing their hands over this display but the reality is that they have no idea to whom those life jackets belonged. For all they know they could have saved the lives of jihadists intent on plying their evil trade in Europe. Nevertheless the hand-wringing and the virtue signalling continues and anyone who dares question the reasoning behind that is instantly deemed heartless.
/// The lifejacket display seeks to highlight the reality of the migrant crisis and urge governments to do more to help. It was set up to coincide with the first United Nations summit on the refugee crisis in New York. ///
Then why aren't the life jacket display set up in New York?
/// The Muslim Mayor should never allowed this to happen. ///
And I wonder if the Muslim Mayor would have allowed the EDL to set up a similar display of miniature Mosques, so as to highlight the growing numbers of these structures across the UK?
All in the way of a peaceful protest, one understands.
I am not sure why the mayor is referred to as a Muslim mayor here. Why not describe him in other ways- eg the elected mayor, the Asian heritage mayor, the popular mayor, the lawyer mayor..
He is a Muslim. He's also the elected mayor, the Asian heritage mayor, the grey haired mayor, the social democrat, the lawyer. He is Muslim too but I don't see why the Muslim part was mentioned here - is it seen to be highly relevant to this issue of refugees. Maybe if I look back i'll see digs at Boris for being the Christian mayor
AOG - //And I wonder if the Muslim Mayor would have allowed the EDL to set up a similar display of miniature Mosques, so as to highlight the growing numbers of these structures across the UK? //
Are you seriously drawing a parallel between drawing attention to people drowning in the ocean, and drawing attention to the building of mosques?
