Attempts to temper ill-considered outpourings of sentimentality with a little rationality and practicality also produce a backlash for those who understand that the situation Europe is currently experiencing is unsustainable. We simply cannot take the world and his wife (although, as has been said, wives are very often abandoned to the allegedly life-threatening situations the husbands are fleeing from).

Naomi-I don't know anyone who is suggesting we can "take the world and his wife" so that point is pointless in this context.
I think nearly all of us on AB come into your category of "those who understand that the situation Europe is currently experiencing is unsustainable", but some of us still share concerns for the horrors some people face in the world and respect the rights of people to take peaceful action like this to highlight their concerns without the 'get a job/litter louts' comments.
We are very fortunate indeed to have been born here and have had forebears who helped build this great country but I still think it's reasonable to empathise with youngsters unfortunate enough to be born elsewhere.
I do agree though with Naomi that the sentimentality is often misplaced and putting help in the wrong place (e.g. supporting refugees in Calais, sending rescue boats patrolling the Med) can make things worse not better for other who may try to follow.

Life never was ‘fair’ and of course it’s reasonable to empathise – but it simply isn’t practical to empathise to the extent of opening our doors to anyone who wants to come here. People are wringing their hands over this display but the reality is that they have no idea to whom those life jackets belonged. For all they know they could have saved the lives of jihadists intent on plying their evil trade in Europe. Nevertheless the hand-wringing and the virtue signalling continues and anyone who dares question the reasoning behind that is instantly deemed heartless.

He is a Muslim. He's also the elected mayor, the Asian heritage mayor, the grey haired mayor, the social democrat, the lawyer. He is Muslim too but I don't see why the Muslim part was mentioned here - is it seen to be highly relevant to this issue of refugees. Maybe if I look back i'll see digs at Boris for being the Christian mayor
