Discussion with my OH about the meaning of this. I thought that it meant that sometimes pearls of wisdom could come from youg people - he thinks it means rubbish. Rather contrasting views and only one of us can be right!

Your right , it means essentially that children tell the truth and that it can be enlightening in it's simplicity.

There are two uses of the phrase in the Bible. The first is from Psalms 8.2..."Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger."
The second is from Matthew 21.15/16..."And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?"

The phrase suggests a source of strength and praise.
