Why do I have to turn my broadband on at the mains to get my Hudl working. I dont have to do this with my mobile phone ? x

Your mobile phone will (unsurprisingly) use the mobile phone network to access the internet (unless you've told it to connect to a wifi signal). So, even if your router is turned off, it can connect to the internet in your house (but any data use will come out of the allowance agreed with your mobile phone service).

Your Hudl can't connect to mobile phone signals. It can only connect to wifi. So if your router is turned off there won't be a connection which it can use.

Incidentally, you should NEVER turn your router off. On the first time which you use a router, the phone system carefully tries to match the signal to your home with what your phone line can reliably handle. That can take about 10 days, so you won't get the fastest download speeds until that time has elapsed. Thereafter the phone system keeps testing your line. If your router is turned off it's regarded as a fault on the line and your broadband speed is reduced to compensate for it.

So, if you keep turning your router off, you'll never get the best download speeds. It should ALWAYS be ON! (It only costs around a penny per day in electricity to leave a router turned on)

Thank you Chris for the info. I did not know about turning the router off. I turn it all off every time I finish on my computerx

I wasn't aware that a router has a 'sleep' mode!

your router needs to be left on but you can still turn your computer(s) off if you want to.
