My grandson is 10 and whenever he gets stressed he claws at his face, rocks himself and bites his arms.

It's getting so bad that the school ring on a regular basis. They just don't know what to do with him and neither do we.

We have asked him why?, what's wrong but he just shrugs and says he doesn't know.

They have taken him to the doctors but he just won't speak to them, they have refered him for Counselling but there's a waiting list.

Darcy.....keep talking to him. There is often a connection between grandkids and their grandparents !

My best guess is that he may be bullied at school, This can often be a problem for boys of his age, and your support and love will help to vocalise his terrors.

Does he have any close friends....boys of his own age that we used to call Best Friends ? They can help as well. Or maybe a cousin perhaps ?

He needs to open up ASAP, because these things can fester like an open wound if they are not tackled quickly. Involve him in as many things as you can....take him out every weekend and just let him feel that that you care. You will need to build up a measure of trust that may be beyond what is normally needed.

But be prepared for what he might say.....Boys never think that anybody will believe them when they open up. He has to trust you !

He gets lots of love and attention at home, they are the sort of family who always do lots of nice things together so I don't thinks its that. He's a very cuddly child and he gets plenty, we like him like that.

We do think it must be the bullying but the school are not really taking it seriously.
Darcy....schools are supposed to take bullying seriously these days, but not all schools seem that they do from my experience.

Bullying can wear people down, and not just small boys. I was bullied terribly only a few years ago, and that was by a Manager in a firm I used to to work for, called Forester Life.

The great think about bullying is that it leaves the bullied person feeling guilty, because they feel that it is something that they should be able to cope and deal with themselves. That is what bullies do...they strip away any feeling that you have any control over your life.

Give this lad a extra cuddle from me please !

Thank you all, just getting it off my chest and hearing others experiences helps.
Buenchico, yes he is very much like you describe yourself almost to a pedantic way.

His Mother will say something like "we waited 10 minutes for the bus" , grandson will pipe up "no Mum it was 8"

Yes definitely sounds like he's on the spectrum

To be honest I thought he might be.
can't add any more to the excellent advice already given, hope you get to the bottom of it and the lad learns to cope in a better way...
My son is autistic and very very clever. He was also a self harmer.

I phoned the doctors, explained to the receptionist, and I had the doctor on the phone within the hour with an appointment at a youth counselling centre.

Your grandson is a bit young but ring these people and they'll tell where to seek help
