37 A. Rolling meadow in New England? It's no longer used to make vetch (5) Neele, It's Lee, meadow, and NE, New England,, Neele is in Chambers, an obsolete form of 'needle' (which fits the 'etch', not Vetch, in the clue).

I found that one tough to get into but well worth the effort.

bobbycollins, because the wordplay in 35d comprises an anagram of meat + e (energy) then the extra A required to complete WONKA could in theory have been supplied by either device. However the surface reading would not really make sense if it read 'Old side of met prepared ...'
