dvd recorder - discs not recording

I have been recording on +rw discs and have had no problems but today I started to use a pack of +r discs and have had problems with every disc.

Firstly, I recorded a programme but on playback the picture kept freezing. I tried other discs but the same thing happened on some occasions and sometimes the recording would just stop and the recorder would switch off. I have tried recording at different speeds and the same thing happens.

My recorder is compatible with +rw and +r discs.

Does anybody know what is going wrong.

Thanks.

Firstly - are you playing back on the same machine you recorded on?
R discs have to be finalised before they play properly on other players. Could this be the cause?

But you could have a faulty batch of discs - it happens and is annoying!

If you have an old rw disc that you know has recorded ok before, try recording on that.

Thanks Ethel. I am using the same recorder and I have used a +rw disc today and that is fine. I also thought it could have been the discs as I am at a loss otherwise.

Thanks again.

Try finalising the faulty disc anyway - as an experiment.
It also depeneds on the make of disc.
I've spent ages trying to find cheap discs on the net, but you get what you pay for
http://www.cdrdvd.com/product.php?pid=2103 seem to be the best i could find (approx 9 for 25) - I was looking for printable ones though

I paid 20 for 50 +r Verbatim discs. Is that the normal sort of price.
9 for 25 printable verbatim dvd+r's (inc p+p)
cheapest i've found, so 20 for 50 isn't too far off

The cheap ones from PC-World are actually quite good (PC-Line? - never had a prob with these)
Is the recorder speed compatable with the disc speed? i.e. if the discs are 16x and the recorder only 4 or 8 you may get recording probs. Just a thought.
Question Author
Thanks Gastwo, the +r discs that are causing the trouble are 16x whereas the +rw ones that I have no problems with are 4x. There is nothing in my user guide to say if these discs are incompatible. I didn't think the disc speed would be a problem but I could be wrong. I think I will ring the helpline tomorrow unless anybody else has any offers. Thanks.
The speeds aren't the problem. They are just max speeds.
ie with 16x discs and a 4x writer, you can only record max 4x
or with a 16x writer and 4x discs you can only write max 4x
Thats what I thought, Bob, but I've got two different writers, one external and one in my lap top, both 8x, and I found neither were happy with 16x (tried 2 different brands, one cheap, one not so). Half way through writing the discs were ejected. Back to 8's, same brands, and no more problems. Odd...
