The cat & the rabbit

My cat has caught a baby rabbit, which is all of 5 inches long and oh my did it scream. I managed to get it away from the cat and safely into a box to recover, it has been asleep for an hour now, but seems quite well.

My question is, what do I do with it once it is up and running around? Is it too small to release back into the field? If I did that would it find it's way home or would it be picked up by the first cat that came along?

Yes, they DO actually scream, don't they? It's the stuff of nightmares! Place it into a bottom of a hedge, if you can, and leave it. It should, by rights, take off. They're quite nimble, despite their size. Make sure there's no cats in the vicinity first though. Good luck.

what a shock!!!.. my advice as jay jay, make sure you keep your cat lokced in till brear rabbit has scarpered!!

The baby is still asleep, but it has moved from the ridgid 'oh my God' position into a happy sleeping one.

I was not even dressed when the cat brought it!

Like the above have already mentioned, you really should put it back outside ASAP. The shock of being inside in a box alone could kill it.

One of our cats once caught what appeared to be a full-sized rabbit. Killed it and brought it back to the house. We were amazed; how did it manage that?!
It sounds as though your rabbit will be OK now - let it wander off. And keep the cat away from it!

The rabbit killer cat, once managed to shove a fully grown rabbit under the base boards in the kitchen. We did not realise this until three weeks later when we got up to the most dreadful smell & maggots all over the kitchen floor.

The baby of today is in a very large box, but is still asleep. I keep checking on it ever 30 minutes or so. It has changed positions inside the box, but sleeps on. As soon as it looks like stiring, I will let it go in the field behind us.
