If you are asked to make a cheque payable in your name do you write your own name where it says pay/? Sorry to seem thick but it does not make sense.I am opening an ISA.

Yes.
Yes, basically you're paying a cheque into an account (in this case your ISA) which is in your name so your name must be in the "Pay" space. Many banks now allow you to transfer money online which is easier to get your head around when it comes to moving money between your own accounts, but you can use a cheque from one of your accounts to pay money into any of your other accounts by simply writting one to yourself.
