Fire Sticks

I might be a bit dim here (or at least technologically challenged), but can anyone explain to me what is (and how do) 'fire sticks' work?
I no longer own a tv but I do miss my films. Am I right in saying that fire sticks provide films via internet? Also can you get other things on them beside films (eg, tv series's ). Ive obviously heard about them but know nothing about how they work, whats available on them etc. Are they updated with other films etc or is it a one off kind of thing?

Nope, getting all sorts popping up. Something to do with virgin media (which I'm on), Flash player updates, warnings about virus's etc.
I'll have to give this one a miss for a while until I get a bit more techno savvy :-)

Will have to stick to You Tube playlists for the time been.
