The argument against the Monarchy (especially in a Constitutional Monarchy like here in the UK) for me always falls apart when the alternatives are considered. Whenever new elected posts are created (such as mayors, police commissioners and so on) immediately from the woodwork emerges an assortment of slime-balls, time-servers, party hacks, washed up...

Plenty of time for his hands.....yep, when you suffer from 'Desert Disease.'
andy at 16:23. I can't really see that to be honest, otherwise he's not really retiring is he ?
if the UK's head of state is to be determined by any means other than the current system, then we would do well to heed the words of douglas adams:-

"One of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them: It is a well known fact, that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. Anyone who is capable of getting themselves into a position of power should on no account be allowed to do the job."
Thank you Prince Philip for you dedication and efforts over many years.

//The one thing the royals don't have is the much prized "freedom" to do what they like when they like, as the rest of us do//

Yes, not like the working class who clock up 40-50 hour working weeks but can just knock off work and take their kids on a decent holiday without the fear of a fine when they want to, or the unemployed who can just just jet off for a jolly abroad every now and then when the fancy takes them.
And prince Harry hardly ever visits nightclubs does he?
Jeez, it must be really hard being a Royal.
Horses for courses, nailit.

You couldn't do their job. They couldn't do yours. And the reason why the poor working class cannot take their children out of school on a whim is because it *** it up for all the other children, some of whom may be yours.

that's bunkem, how do you know that? If I were to be born into their world (or them into mine) then we'll talk. We were all born into different circumstances with different upbringings.

//And the reason why the poor working class cannot take their children out of school on a whim is because it *** it up for all the other children, some of whom may be yours//

So you agree with me that its different for the 'poor'?
Which Royal has taken their children out of school during term time for a holiday Nailit?

None that I know off. They don't have to
Sorry Nailit but you are just being bitter!
Thanks for that Islay, very informative.
Why am I bitter? I just pointed out the flaws in bhg's post and all of a sudden I'm bitter?
wow!
Enjoy your retirement Prince Philip.

This little tirade paints you as bitter, why are people working 40-50 hours a week?
You state that they don't have to worry about taking their children on holiday or fear a fine - I asked for evidence that any of them had done that - you could not provide it!
Just a little bitter rant!
// I asked for evidence that any of them had done that - you could not provide it! //
Because I don't have to.
Whats the problem? The Royals have privaliges that the rest of us don't. And?
A working class man has to seek permission etc to take his kids for a holiday (or at least an afordable one) and all of a sudden I'm on a tirade and on a rant????
Stop been a sheep....
“So you agree with me that its different for the 'poor'?”

Absolutely. And I would not want it any other way. Are you really suggesting that the Monarch and her family should live in a two bedroom council flat in a tower block? Or are you recommending that everybody should live in Buckingham Palace? The Royal Family live very privileged lives and that’s the way it should be.

“If I were to be born into their world (or them into mine) then we'll talk.”

But you (and they) were not. I’m talking about how things are, not how they might be.

“We were all born into different circumstances with different upbringings.”

Exactly. That’s all you need to accept. Then you will understand that you could not live in their world any more than they could in yours.

Your rant was febrile and ridiculous. If you want to make a case for the abolition of the Monarchy by all means feel free. But you need to do a little better than simply suggest they should live like us or we like them.
Well said NJ
