These statistics are usually nonsense. Five days is far too short a period but it's not really surprising as tensions are high and some exploit these situations to push their own agenda. . . Data needs to be viewed with a large pinch of salt. Pressure groups can encourage people to report, exaggerate/make up claims of hate crime; and thee isn't always a link between the numbers of reports and the number of claims
Yes, fiction-factory. We wouldn't want to be forming instant opinions based on reports.
Would we?
I can sense sarcasm in your post there douglas but if that's what it was it's wasted on me as I can't see your point
That doesn't surprise me at all.
Comparing two days' data when the numbers are so small (28 claims out of maybe 2 million citizens) seems meaningless, especially for something that is hard to identify .
But is is clear these atrocities do lead to a hardening of views, often illogical views, as we see so much on here as people want something to be done and think there are simplistic solutions that the police/authorities/ politicians cannot see (or these latter groups realise knee jerk reactions may make things worse)
Are you not able to put in words what you mean, douglas?
However raw and emotional people are following any dreadful occurrence like this , there is never an excuse for hate.

If you have suspicions report them by all means but don't lash out.
The report quotes figures from the police, not people who want something done.
Where would you like believable facts to come from?
I'm perfectly able to express myself but when up against a virtual goggle-eyed 'who guv, me guv?' seeker of truth I fear I'd only feed your already bloated self importance.
Probably doing you a favour by ending here.
The reports come from the public. The police have to investigate them. It doesn't necessarily mean there have been more attacks or actual crimes. I hope there hasn't been more hate crimes (maybe some hope there are more) but I can see that emotions are high and some will lash out. But i still think it seems odd to try to draw conclusions into two days' figures.
Thanks for explaining douglas. I've no idea why you regard me as a "virtual goggle-eyed 'who guv, me guv?' seeker of truth" with "an already bloated self importance" , particularly as I'm ususally out at work all day and post infrequently outside Crosswords. Maybe you are mistaking me for someone else
The notion of a 'hate' crime is the most absurd concept ever. An extreme example of the hyperbolic use of language. Any crimes perpetrated against special interest groups are automatically placed in that category. A crime is a crime, irrespective of motive and the idea of 'hate' should have no part to play, nor should it result in harsher penalties.
Maybe I could report the 14:32 post as a hate crime but I'll just put it down as an unfounded rant or maybe just a dig from someone I maybe caught at a bad time, so iI won't trouble the Ed or the police with it
The biggest hate crime was killing 22 innocent young people and they are worried about someones hurt feelings.

Dave.
From the link:-

‘I have sent a personal message out to all the faith leaders and places of worship today and have thanked them for the support...'

The key word there is support.

I wonder if this is given on a regular basis and not just in times of distress? Hmmm...
Fiction Factory: //Data needs to be viewed with a large pinch of salt. Pressure groups can encourage people to report, exaggerate/make up claims of hate crime//

Here's a typical example from one of our biggest mischief-making pressure groups:

"If you, your organisation or someone you know has been the victim of harassment or discrimination due to your Muslim faith, please complete the form below. Examples of harassment include threatening gestures, verbal or online abuse and hate mail, as well as physical assaults – in particular where there is evidence that the incident is linked to being Muslim or being perceived to be Muslim.
We will respect your confidentiality and will not pass your information to a third party without your consent: The MCB can liaise with the Police or other bodies directly to support your case, or if you would not like to contact the Police directly, we can do so as a “Third Party Reporter”.

The aim, of course, is to establish an equivalence between mass murderers and yobs who tear a girl's scarf off.

The multicultural pieties "thanks for the support of all religious groups" and "I have been inspired by the determination, compassion and solidarity that characterises this diverse city" tells you a lot about today's Chief Constables.

Hey, guys, look at this. Community spirit (or is it the Rotherham spirit?) strong as ever.
