I think we need more armed plain clothes police, (like Dirty Harry!).
No one will attack in the sight of an armed policemen and there cannot ever be enough for blanket coverage, but knowing there are armed men in plain clothes makes for less certainty for how long your rampage might last - or even begin.

The services did excellently during this attack, but I can't help but wonder what would have happened if the attackers had not chosen a place like London Bridge. It's a prominent and well-known area of London, so you 'd expect armed police to be close by there. It's awful to imagine but I reckon they would have had a lot more than 8 minutes in a "quieter" part of the country.
@Khandro....You have said....."No one will attack in the sight of an armed policemen".
I go along with Baldric who has said...."I don't think a Suicide Bomber would give a second thought to pushing the button even standing next to one".
It might be comforting to see armed Police, but they are unlikely to shoot at someone who is acting somewhat suspiciously. If the person concerned is then confronted and questioned by an armed Police Officer in a crowded place, he/she under suspicion is going to be the first to 'pull the trigger'.

You are perhaps right about suicide bombers, though none have ever blown themselves up next to armed policemen and I think they would be well spotted before they did, that's why they always go into crowds. I was thinking of a rampage as the London bridge attack with knives.
I think the police response took nearly ten minutes.

"Jeremy Corbyn has argued that people who support Islamic State should not be prosecuted for “expressing a political point of view”.
The Labour leader told MPs that Britain should not make "value judgements" and that holding a view was not in itself "an offence." "

When it comes to supporters of ISIL, I definitely will make "value judgements" Jeremy.
