Sea Monkeys

How often do really need to feed these guys? My son has had them about two months and the instructions say that you should feed them when the water is no longer green. The water has been green for nearly all of the two months and he has only fed them 2 or 3 times. There are definitely less sea monkeys than there used to be!! Water has lots of algae looking stuff in it, but is clear enough and isn't cloudy. Also, how do you purify water? Is that the same as boiled water cooled down?
