I was confused with tonight's programme. One mum to be was in a bath of water.
Baby's head was out and under water. No rush to get mum out of water..
How come baby didn't drown?
Am I being a bit thick?

The baby is in liquid through its time in the womb until the waters break, and then has oxygen through the umbilical cord until it is born. No need to get the baby out until it comes into contact with air.

Baby has had his/her head in fluid for the past 9 months. A few more seconds isn't going to make much difference! He/she will still be getting oxygenated blood through the umbilical cord.

P.P is quite correct, if the neonate takes in air (breaths) underwater, then it might drown. One of the dangers (unusual) of water births.
