Need help on two (they may contain letters not provided by the wordplay or a misprinted definition)
11 across: Great steeplechaser opens up to cover ground - back on his rostrum, as of old (10) ????LEA?E? ( I think rostrum is changed to nostrum.
28 down: Eisenhower finally overriding pressure of peace to create second front (6) ???A??
Thanks in advance
11. The steeplechaser is Arkle, and the answer is a nostrum.
28. The first letter is 'Eisenhower finally', and the rest involves removing/overriding the 'p'/pressure in the word 'peace. The other letter is 'not provided by wordplay'. The whole is 'to create second front'.
PS. I think there's another thread with these, I'm sure I've discussed these already.
I too was expecting a much harder one for the 1500th edition, but one thing is bugging me. Unless I'm mistaken, the answer to 23a - American trumpeter uses this instrument (6) - has two spellings, the variable being the second vowel. As this letter is unchecked and "not provided by wordplay", I assume either version will be accepted, but it is unusual to have such ambiguity in an Inquisitor. Am I missing something?
