NJ...handsome is as handsome does as far as I am concerned, Whether you like or not, and you plainly don't, our NHS and care system relies heavily on immigrants.
I have just returned from visiting my brother in Singleton Hospital, where he has recently been moved from Cardiff. He has been in Hospital now since the 1st February, and is likely to need at least another 2 months care.
This afternoon was typical, in as such as 90% of the staff that are attending him are immigrants, and very grateful my family and I are, for the excellent care he is getting.
If we can't or won't train enough of our own people to do these jobs, then I sincerely hope that these immigrants will want to continue to travel 1000's of miles to do so.

This is not because of Brexit. (Brexit simply means we choose who comes here and are not compelled to accept all-comers). It is because the current model (if that's what it can be called) is simply unsustainable. The longer it is left unchanged the worse the problem that needs to be solved will be.

Our NHS only gives the appearance of relying on immigrants because it was easier to attract and employ a cheaper workforce from abroad, and short circuit the national market, than attract native UK staff. High time that was stopped and then there'd be fewer UK citizens living on our welfare system/taxes and in addition being proud to be making a contribution instead. And as a further bonus, other countries won't lose valued medical staff to the UK any longer.
OG.....not sure that the NHS gives that impression at all....as far as our families experience goes, its bang on the dollar......if those immigrants were suddenly to go missing, we would have a catastrophic crisis on our hands, with immediate effect.

Thank goodness these people want to come here and earn some money, doing the jobs that our own lazy dole-bludgers refuse to do.

He also completely ignores the fact that staff, whether from abroad or here are subject to pay scales and it actually costs MORE to employ them than it would UK staff.
How he comes to the conclusion that paying NHS foreign staff equates to them living on the welfare system is beyond me.

Mikey, you’re scaremongering. The overwhelming majority of staff employed in the NHS are British, and of those who are not, Europeans are in the minority.

Naomi....you have your head in the sand again. There was a report a few mins ago on Radio 4, that we are short of 3,500 midwives, causing Maternity wards to close.
The whole NHS has huge vacancies, across the board, and immigration is helping to solve that situation.

Mikey, my head is not in the sand, I’m (unfortunately) more familiar with hospitals than I want to be – and I don’t deliberately obscure the facts with scaremongering. This thread is about Europe – not about immigration per se. Government figures confirm that NHS staff from Europe form the minority which indicates that Europe is not our sole source of recruitment.
I listened to the news that Mikey referred to and apparently the longest any maternity ward has been closed is 24 hours. Whilst there is a shortage of midwives, the main reason is the unpredictable nature of childbirth which sometimes creates a shortage of beds. The Royal College of Midwives agree that closures are occasionally necessary.
