I don't watch much football these days, and if this is representative of the current standard then I'm not missing much.

England have limped through to the World Cup Finals in Russia next year - but what a drab and dreary team they were tonight.

On this form they'd be lucky to get more than a draw against 11 strategically placed wheelie bins ...
Was it? I was watching the Scotland match. Squeaky bum time as usual, but deus ex machina. Roll on Sunday!

I was channel hopping - the Scots left it late, but at least created a good few chances along the way - England were inept (at best) and woeful for most of the match. Relying on a (lucky?) boot stuck out by Kane is hardly a recipe for future success.
It was a dreary game alright as Ian Wright said 'Painful to watch'.
Couldn't agree with you more, S-D.....yet another 2 hours I'll never get back....they seem to do it in every game, they were absolutely awful tonight and lucky to get the goal in added time. My son and I have been watching in amazement, at their lack of style, creating chances and lack lustre attitude........even Ian Wright said 'not good enough'......

Think I'll support Malta from now on, as one of my favourite countries to visit in Europe, and just a lovely island with friendly people. :-)
A poor game but nothing lucky about Kane's finish.
Question Author
OK - Kane was well placed - that the cross reached him was ... fortuitous.
Kyle Walker's cross was a good one, it was fortuitous that their keeper threw it out when he did.
Not enough English players getting top class experience in leading Premier League clubs
Clubs not interested in anything but the League and fighting amongst themselves for overseas players
Money
Daisy, you've hit the nail on the head !

Yes Daisy - very well put and regrettably true
English players are rarely seen in foreign leagues: that I am sure says something, but I am not sure what. I was much happier watching out glorious defeat to Germany. I suspect the rest of the world should hand the Germans the trophy now. If Sebastian Rudy's strike isn't goal of the sesaon it'll be something awesome that tops it
The game was pretty dire. Scraping a win with a scrappy goal and then celebrating like you've won the World Cup.....mmmm.
