I'm getting a bit tired of this English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh thing that keeps cropping up. All the white caucasion people in the British Isles share 99.99% of the same DNA. That means we are all descended from the same people. I am English, my great grandmother was Scottish, but now live in the Isle of Man (nobodyever bothers to mention the Isle of Man (especially the BBC weathermen. Manx people have their own national anthem and they follow that with the National Anthem "God Save the Queen". Anyone ever having been to see a TT race will testify.
Please, we all live in the most beautiful set of islands in the world. We all have our different customs and accents, which is absolutely wonderful in its diversity. Scotland has beautiful mountains and majestic wildlife, together with the most lovely accent I have ever heard anywhere in the world. The Welsh have majestic mountains and gorgeous beaches too and the most melodic accent int he world . The Northern Irish have a wonderful sense of humour, beautiful natural scenery (e.g. Giant's Causeway) and a great laid back attitude to life generally, despite what a lot of people think (vis a vis the IRA. The English have an eccentric and black sense of humour, lovely rolling hills, downs and The Pennines.
All the animosity stems from the view that the English put down the Scottish and Irish people, but this is a flawed argument. It was basically the rich against the poor. The English poor were treated in much the same barabaric manner as the Scottish, Welsh & Irish poor. Those times are long gone now. I am proud to be English, part Scottish, a neighbour of Ireland and Wales, proud to be living in the Isle of Man and PROUD TO BE BRITISH. Who cares about a little song?
Rant Over.

Well said!!
Rich vs poor.. absolutely correct. Damned imperialist war-mongers...
Mind you, is it all really in the past?
Average life expectancy for men in some parts of Glasgow is just over 60 years. That's worse than parts, of what we describe as, Thirld World countries.
Are there parts of the Isle of Man with such a statistic, or for that matter any of the boroughs of London?
Generally speaking, (very generally speaking), a good number of English people that I met while living in England were particularly ignorant of anything outside their own little patch.
My point from the very beginning has been to do with ignorance or racism.
I share a similar amount of DNA with English people as I also do with French and Scandanavian folk, but I certainly do not have the same cultural background as they do, nor do I fundamentally think in the same way.
Hence, the question about songs/football matches/history lessons.
It seems a popular question that English folk ask of themselves is, "Why don't other countries like us?".
And it's not jealousy, or past history or financial power, but it does appear to stem from an almost inherent belief in a good proportion of the English nation that they are simply superior to other countries and that's why a small group of football fans can blithely sing songs about "Britain" and think that they are appropriate in an English context.
Chip on my shoulder indeed....I'll tell you I am evenly balnced bloke...I have chips on both my shoulders,

comparing average life expectancies in glasgow to the 3rd world is repugnant in the extreme. you reall are a repugnant little wee person.
death rates in glasgow are bought on by self infliction and self abuse. namely cigarettes, alcohol and bad fatty diets.
death rates in 3rd world countries are realated to war, famine and pestilence.

Who are these "funny English types" you keep referring to? That sounds like the most racist comment in this post.
It seems like a ridiculous proposition, seeing as the English are also British, why should they not sing Rule Britannia? You seem to be jumping to some pretty hefty conclusions.
Besides, how many England football games have you been to where Rule Britannia is sung? I can't remember hearing it since the 80's!
