The Big One could be as little as 30 to 50 years away. Until now it had been thought to be a million or more years away.

No, a serious cull no doubt but, there have been several ELEs in the past but some life always survives.
"There are bigger problems than Brexit to worry about! " - you sure? during the campaign the remainers were more or less saying it would be the end of the world!
But if Thatcher hadn't been so anti-EU then Brexit sentiment would have died out in the 1980s, or something. :/
