What is wrong with broadening the scope of the curriculum? //
Absolutley nothing, providing it is done for the correct reason.
It stands to reason, giv en history, that there will be predominately white historical authors, trying to change that too early will mean you could end up including writers of colour who are below the mark of some white writers so diluting the course content which helps no one of any colour studying English Lit.
This will change over time, problem is you cant speed up time to get history!
