Any Vegetable Growers Out There?

We are the process of clearing out an old wooded area and converting it into a Veg plot. I've never grown veg before apart from runner beans. I need help. I have a few questions if you don't mind.The finished area will be approx 100 sq Mtrs.

The soil appears to be very rich in leaf mould and looks lovely. Will I need to enrich the soil in anyway and if so, with what?

I've pretty much sorted out the veg I want to grown come next spring. Is there anything I can put in to start growing now (well in about a weeks time)?

I will be planting a couple of fruit trees as well. A cooking Apple and a Damson. Any variety suggestions would be appreciated?

Thanks Woof. I'll consider that when I have the apple and damson in. Not sure we will have the room for more than the two trees. Don't want to comprise on the light coming into the veg plot. The cottages next door both have trees that already shade part of the plot. X

I know the issue mazie...I am a tree a holic and have got around 20 in giant tubs, both fruiting and decorative. someone else may find the link handy.....maybe we should ask ed for a this week in my garden thread like the onwards and downwards one?

Me again Woof. Had a bit of luck on EBay. Picked a Merryweather damson tree out. £19.95 + postage. Went to check the sellers website and it turns out they are 2 miles from my home.... I've order the merryweather Damson it has to be ordered as they are picked and dug up from their fields. The cost when I pick it up is just £13!!! so over the moon. She suggested Autumn Bliss raspberries and they work out at £1 per plant...I have no idea if this is good or bad. They also have a blueberry bush, 2 years old for £3.50.. Looked at their apple trees and thinking about a Granny Smith, semi dwarf root stock....,. What do you think? Great Idea about a monthly gardening thread. Are you going to talk to the Ed? Can't thank you enough for your help so far x

Hi Woof. What do you think about the granny smith? I'd like to order it and pick it up with the damson. So far I have ordered for collection. The damson, raspberry canes, blueberry bushes and a couple of gooseberries :0) should all the in in 2 weeks time . the pathways should also be in place then.

Hi Mazie,
It your soil is acidic, then the blueberries that you mention should do well, alternatively they can be grown in large planters or raised beds with ericaceous compost.
