I am thinking of cancelling my Sky in favour of freeview, I have quite a few recordings on my Sky box that I would like to keep, I understand that if I cancel Sky I would loose all my recorded stuff, my question is is it possible to transfer recorded items from my Sky box onto a dvd disc>

I'm sure it isn't, but have a look to see if they are on YouTube, or if DVDs of them are on Amazon or eBay
It could be possible if you have a DVD recorder that will take input from SCART or HDMI socket, whatever output your Sky box has. Connect the second recorder's input to the output of the Sky box, start it recording and play the programme on the Sky box. It's very tedious because the recording can only be done in real time. Few DVD recorders will accept input through an external socket nowadays - they record from the tuner and the SCART/HDMI sockets are usually output only, but you might be lucky.
I have all my Sky recordings on DVD’s,do as bhg says,or You Tube will have videos on how to do it.
