Sure, they make us humans feel good - but animals have no idea what a medal for bravery actually is:

Surely a more appropriate award for Mali would be a lifetime supply of Pedigree Chum, a field of female dogs* and all the postmen he can chew on?

Some of you seem to have a woofless streak.

///er, no, humans do know they're risking their lives///

Where did I say humans didn't know?
Considering animals allow us to share their planet, let us train them to exploit their wonderful talents to benfit us - they deserve every recognition.

Medals, fine.

Treats,absolutely.

Chewing postmen, no.

Dogs appreciate the approval of their pack leader. The handler.

I can see the point that the medals are really irrelevant. The dog qualifies not the human, and the dog doesn't give a darn. But you can see that the humans like to give official recognition for being a good boy, and doing a job well.

Maybe extra fuss after doing well would be better appreciated.
Most recipients of the Dickin Medal are Pigeons,Dogs and Horse - but this story of Simon is nice too.

Awww that's a lovely story, Mamy.
Yes it is, one of the many subjects I used to discuss with my Dad when I was small - he taught me a lot.
I didn't know about Simon, thank you Mamy. Should Mali have been given a medal, yes why not. I am sure he will get lots of treats and love as well.
what sad person you must be sp
Why's he sad? Some of us agree with him, are we sad too?
if the cap fits...
Was the two part question too difficult for ya 3T? ;-)

Why's he/we sad?
Personally, I think it's wonderful that dogs are given medals, the mere fact that they are being made a fuss of makes a dog happy and where's the harm ?? I'm sure such dogs get a lot more fuss made of them after the ceremony as well which probably incudes treats and suchlike.

What a beautiful dog Mali is and what a hero too.
i think they are a great thing no matter that they are animals, they think, care and generally look out for us, so why not.
I see nothing wrong with honouring animals like this. If nothing else it highlights to us all what they do, after all how many would know what the dog did if it was not for the medal?

As for the dogs reward, I'm sure it receives plenty. Not sure about Chum though it is vile stuff, gave my dogs fresh meat with biscuits and the stink reduced overnight with much firmer stools produced..
// Sure, they make us humans feel good //

There you go then.
