I've filled the grid in, but only got 21 definite extra letters, which only give me the last two words to assist me. Also I've no idea which the two clues with interchanged definitions are, so have no idea what to highlight. I've realised the whole crossword is something to do with 'red' colours (or that's what I think.
Please can some kind person help this snowed-in OAP??

some downs will help with the 3rd last word ......then you should be able to do some googling of the clue from the last 3 words + RED
4d regular letters from rechecking ...defn roll-up replacement
6d usual 3 letter synonym for Tory reversed, 2 letter abbrev for army reserves + 2 letter abbrev for part of bible
7d the fair lady is the one in Pygmalion
8d is an anagram defn is sea urchin

Thank you roslyn251254. I have all the answers but it's the extra letters I'm having trouble with getting (yes, I'm thick) the unchecked letters I have at the start up to 25 across are NELPECH and I have the last two words.

dont need the H ( i had that originally but Ohio can just be O i think)
E from 28a (l eg Eg ed .... 2 for examples + led)
With your 1st 6 letters you should now have the 1st 2 words 5,5

Think I've now got the theme: N.... P.... P.... O.. H...... Y.... O. and I assume this somehow gives me a colour to shade the two intersecting answers?? or am I, as usual, one the wrong track?
