I once worked behind the bar at a Hotel ballroom that was being used for a Freemasons lunch. After the lunch and the speeches they told me ''We are having the private part of our meeting now so you have to leave the room. ''
The landlord told me to just move to the service area behind the bar so I was out of sight but could still come back if someone wanted a drink. I recognized many of those present at the lunch including our local MP and senior police officers as well as local council members.
I could hear every thing that was going on, they really do sing silly songs about each other praising their achievements and each verse ending with the refrain '' For He's a good and an honorable mason''
I was having to bite my lip not to laugh and give the game away.
Got bought a lot of free drinks by those who knew me did not want me to tell anyone I had seen them there.

//I think that the police should be banned for joining secret clubs.//
A nice idea but think about it - secret - not going to be easy.
You can ban one and another springs up, often better with these things to have an 'open' secret like the masons are really.
And I'm sure it doesnt need to be a special handshake to get some prosecutions dropped.

Nearly all male magistrates / Judges are Masons as well , a defendant who is also a Mason will use a particular phase or signal to indicate that to the bench. Unless of course he has already dropped a hint at the Masonic Lodge that he will be up in court on a particular day.
All done very subtly but it happens and of course the result will be as expected.

Also if a Mason does get sent to jail, the governor and assistant are virtually certain to be Mason's as well assuming they are male. Once again a Mason will have an easier time in jail, nicer cell, better prison job, than a non Mason. In the open jail I worked in all the best jobs, prison librarian, prison laundry supervisor, prison minibus driver (yes really!) all went to Masons.
Masonic joke:
Chap driving home gets breathalysed and is over the limit. He tells the constable he's been to the lodge. Constable decides to consult the sergeant, who in turn decides to consult the inspector. Inspector offers to drive the man home. On the way he asks him which lodge he's been to. The man replies, "Yate's Wine Lodge".
