Can anyone give me a hint as to how to treat the clues whose answers have more letters than the number given in brackets? This is my first try at an Inquisitor puzzle and I have done most of the grid, but do not know the theme, and am now quite stuck!

10d is 10 letters 6 of which are in the crossing square
19a has 9 letters split 6,3 ....6 of these are in the crossing square.....
together these 12 letters give one of the theme words. This crossing square will then be left blank as per the preamble
