Actually, it not as dangerous as you might think. I've been several time, and I've also travelled around Mexico and Colombia - both places with fearsome reputations. The problem is, unless you've been to a place (and you're reliant on news pieces), it's impossible to assess their threat levels.
Jamaica as a huge gun problem, but like (say) New York, you have to consciously go to the very roughest areas (Brooklyn and the Bronx) to encounter anything that you might see on the news.

I don't see the point of travelling around the world to be restricted to a complex. Hardly new experiences or likely to broaden the mind. If it's not safe to go see the community, choose somewhere else to go.
