I presume that males working on the tills receive the same pay as the females, so I take it that if any female worked in the warehouse she would receive the same pay as her male counterparts.

I can't see how the two roles are equal, working in the warehouse must involve much more heavy manual work than just sitting down at the tills.

Pixie - absolutely right. I've seen both men and women on the checkouts at Tesco and I have read that there are some women working in the warehouses. So long as everybody, regardless of gender, is paid the same as all the others working in the same place (with the same experience etc) there is no argument.
Lets see what the Courts make of this !
In large companies, you have things calls 'job streams' or 'job families'. They have these to equalise pay across different departments within the same company and these job families will have pay structures which reflect the market.

What we don't know is whether a warehouse worker is in the same job stream as a cashier. If they are, then the pay should be equal (eg. a grade five senior cashier who's salary range is between £15k and £17k should be on an equal footing as a grade five warehouse supervisor).
In August last year, an employment appeal tribunal backed a ruling the previous October that workers in roles across the shop floor can compare their jobs with those done predominantly by men for a higher wage in Asda’s warehouses.
Hmmm, where I work, there are a couple of people who we really couldn't do without, and others who could be easily replaced. They all have the same job title and work similar hours, but the good'uns get paid more than the others because we want to keep them.
One is a man, one is a woman^^^
If Tesco loses and they have to pay out a fortune then they will get it back by making a load of redundancies. These women will have shot themselves in the foot.

In our local DIY shops, the times I have been told by a female worker, "I will get one of our male operatives to help you out to your car with that".
That makes sense really as men are generally stronger, so it's less effort for them. Physical work doesn't generally pay more though.
When I worked in a warehouse we had 3 women fully trained on reach truck and forklifts they got exactly the same pay as the men did and were just as good if not better than some of the men there!
Yes, there are fewer Nd fewer jobs where heavy lifting is even allowed, let alone a requirement. Fork lifts, trolleys, wheelbarrow, hoists.... employers are obliged to have the right equipment.
