The bill //acknowledges that while parents have the right to give religious guidance to their children, “such a right can never exceed the rights of the child”.//

Both Jewish and Islamic organisations have condemned the proposal, but good for Iceland. Let’s hope the rest of the so-called civilised world has the courage to follow suit.

naomi...what am I looking at?

sqad, the post above my last to you, where I said, "this surgical procedure is carried out without anaesthetic and mostly by unqualified people. There is no defence for that".
cloverjo; //There could be other reasons for that [than male circumcision] //.

Like what?
nami...ah! I see.

That is only partly correct as if done by a doctor (surgeon) then an anaesthetic IS used.
Banning the procedure will send more "trade" to the unqualified.
Here is one abstract (of many) I realise it's a few years old but is quite comprehensive. The jury is still out.

I think that although this is a small start it is a good one, though extra vigilance to prevent pushing the practice further underground will involve work.

sqad, the ‘trade’ is already with the unqualified. It’s usually done by rabbis and imams who don’t use anaesthetic.
naomi....I appreciate that but my contention IS, that after making the procedure illegal, then more cases will go to the unqualified AWAY from qualified surgeons who fear that they may well, now, be prosecuted.
Question Author
sqad, the point is that unless the rabbis and imams are qualified surgeons which is extremely doubtful, this 'trade' never goes to qualified surgeons - ever. It's a religious ritual carried out on every Jewish and Muslim boy by their families' religious leaders.
ban it, it should be mandatory according to this, with a surgeon etc

Excellent, I'm very happy to hear this. Despite being from a Jewish family, my mother's family are very much against circumcision, as are a growing number of Jews. People are waking up slowly even within the religious community and the more we de-normalise the mutilation of little boys the more society, both secular and religious, will reject it. https://www.circinfo.org/Jews_against_circumcision.html
