Partners Surname
1 Answers
I actually have two questions.
1) My partner had to go abroad just after our son was born and wasnt able to get back before I registered his birth. We'd also had a bit of a fall out about this. I was wondering if there was any way to have my partners name on the Birth Certificate now as it was just left blank and the Registrar wasn't much help when I asked her? (We live in Scotland, and all online searching has referred to England & Wales)
2) My partner and I are planning to get married next year. Would our son take his last name automatically? Also I have two other children. Could they take his last name legally aswell, or would he have to adopt them?
Thank you in advance.

If an estranged/seperated parent also has parental responsibility, then they have to give their consent to the change also. It has to be done via a solicitor. The child then will always be known as her/his new name. When applying for passports/banks etc, whenever the birthcert has to be shown, the certificate of deed poll accompanies it. After a passport is recieved, it is sometimes easier to use your passport instead of your birth cert when the occasion requires it.
You can add your husband's name to the birth cert. Just go to the registry office and ask for the application form. If you get no joy, ask to speak to a more senior registrar.
good luck and it is lovely that you have ironed out your probs...Congrats on the pending marriage also. :-)
