It can be awful if you don't get on - 2 experiences of that, one was a case of just really getting on each others nerves to the point that when she came through the front door I felt myself tense up and grit my teeth! Latest one was just because the girl in question was lazy, never did her share of the chores - she'd spend hours cleaning her own room but it didn't occur to her hoover even the landing carpet directly outside her room let alone anywhere else! She was also really mean - never bought any of the communal things like toilet roll - and was utterly self obsessed too. Grrrrrr. She's just moved out - yippee!!
On the other hand, the other girl I currently share with is great - we get on well, we both do our share of things, buy our share of things and it just works.
It depends entirely on the people and personalities involved. Plus's are sharing of bills - tv licence split a few ways, council tax is split etc. Definitely works out cheaper and you have company too but can disappear into your own room if you fancy your own space.

depends on your flatmate. maybe not so surprisingly my husband has been my worst flatmate - messy, never puts things back where they should go, forgets to buy milk, leaves clothes in the lounge, etc
i definitely think girls make better flatmates (from my experience). In my single days I've lived with both. My best flatmate was my best friend and we had the same interests, same level of cleanliness and kept similar hours which are all very important!

I've lived with various other people for the last four years (admittedly in a house rather than a flat), and have enjoyed every minute of it. It certainly depends on the people you share with, at the moment I live with two other guys, both of whom are very laidback and similar to me so we have a great time, it's sort of like Joey and Chandler's house all the time here! We also each do our fair share of cleaning, tidying etc each, so there's no problems whatsoever. I can imagine it would be a bit of a nightmare if you didn't see eye to eye with your flatmate, though.
