"Liberal" has acquired a somewhat different meaning in America today, Spathiphyllum. It's not "liberal" in the sense we normally use it here - John Stuart Mill and all that. The Americans call that "classical" liberalism.

American liberalism embraces most of the progressive causes like gay marriage, affirmative action and the like, sometimes at the expense of the fundamental liberal value of freedom of speech.

That would be a weirdly specific thing to happen. No...as far as I’m aware, there have been no stories about Obama staff being refused service in any restaurant...however, do you really want to start pulling at that particular thread?

You could certainly argue that - but could you not also argue that new-conservatism prevents freedom of expression?
