I've had some very heated discussions with northeners (hubby included)and scots about swedes which they call turnips ,I say swedes are orange and turnips are white with purple tops .I even took my grandaughters scots friend to a veg stall where they were clearly marked swede but she got quite animated and said no no no they are turnips ,which camp are you in ?

I cannot ever remember eating, or even seeing, the white, purple-topped variety when I was young. In the north-east swedes are generally referred to as turnips. If you wanted the white variety you would have to specify.
Ah, swedes are green then; got it (I think) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutabaga

Aye they are.
Haggis, neeps and tatties.

First catch your wild heather-eating haggis.
A Neep is ORANGE, boil and mash with butter and pepper.
Tatties - boiled spuds for the southerners, mash iwth butter.

Dollop a generous amount of each on a plate and devour :-))

Alba can be as rude as she likes ;-)
I am with mally, turnip white, swede orange. I also have a northern hubby and he calls fairy cakes ‘buns’.
They English folk are strange .
I agree with the colour definition. However I was grown up before I first saw a white turnip and I've never eaten one. Given the predominance of the swede here it became known, and still is referred to, as turnip.
cheers, Volty x I'm always polite (says she with her fingers crossed)

Before the advent of pumpkin carving for Hallowe'en, the carving of a big Neep (turnip) was required.

Can't do that with an itsy-bitsy white thingy very well :-D
