I'm nearly there but need help with two answers (especially the word play) There is a misprint of one letter in each clue. 4 down: Just the French upset after start of ruin in European Union (5) SQU?L 6 down: Dog listed originally as killer is actually liability (5) LAI?A ( I assume it's Laika but can't work out why!

I've no longer got my copy, so can't be exact. 4 Down was Equal, I think. Would 'liFted' work for 6 Down? I worked backwards for some of the misprints, once I knew what the message was.

You're welcome, Ripper. I've worked out 4 D - the misprint is in 'ruin', the 'r' becomes 'q' . That gives us EU, La ('the French', upset, so reversed -Al) and the Q from Quin.

4D: Misprint is ruin for quin. Definition is Just. The French is La, which when upset is aL. European Union is EU. So E-q-U-aL
6D: Misprint is listed for lifted. Definition is Dog. Answer is the lifted originals (ie initial letters) of the last five words, giving laika
