I also feed with Aluminium Sulphate to deepen the colour. When the flowers have gone I leave them on all winter. They do not look pretty but they do the following summer. I have also watered them 3 times a week this year due to the dry weather. Lots of water.
I have a lovely blue hydrangea (well it goes pinky/purple if I don't treat it) and have had it about 10 years. Mine also didn't flower this year and I also only lightly prune off the dead heads after the last frosts. With mine I saw buds coming but they all shrivelled off in the heatwave while I was on holiday and it didn't get watered. I'm assuming it will return to normal next year.
