Were Shotgun Cartridges Loaded With Salt Pellets Once Available To Gamekeepers?

I think I once read they were used to pepper poachers without doing too much harm to them.

I recall a bank robber who turned supergrass giving evidence who stated his first round in rthe breech was loaded with rice (8 shot pump action). If the teller/security guard was not compliant after a peppering with rice he went on to lead shot. I met some really nice people who I had to protect. :-(

I don't have much to add, but I remember a colleague telling me a similar story about a gamekeeper, who replaced lead shot with rock salt in his cartridges and would shoot poachers in the legs, if he caught them.

( my boss was Thpanith - Basque actually - the idea was to soak your bottom wherein the shot was in a horse trough - we were all very rural in those days)

In the thivil War they clearly er shot each other with bullets

My grandad used to fill his cartridges with pearl barley when he was shooting rabbits. So that the stew thickened nicely on its own.

I should have known that.

My grandad had a story about Pearl Bailey and filling, Togo, although now I read your comment I realise I may have misheard. :-)
