Bliss Tonight Would Have Been....
57 Answers
The party to celebrate the big birthday of my son...with a little side birthday celebration for my granddaughter's tomorrow birthday....and being introduced to my son's girlfriend.....and my grandson's girlfriend.....at last!
But...the bloody music was so bloody loud I ended up using British Sign Language which nobody else understood....and texting folk on the same table!!!!
Five times my son tried to tell me the name of the girlfriend.....she is lovely so I just gave her a kiss....no idea still what to call her.
I asked the landlady if the music could be turned down...but no, not possible....Dave and my brother stopped me from crawling underneath the discoey get up thing to pull the plug...
I know I'm old....as are Dave and my brother.....but surely we aren't the only ones who would like to chat and banter with other guests at a do....I'm hoarse from shouting....my ears are ringing....and I have no idea whether or not I need to buy a hat..... :-(

There's nothing inherently wrong with very loud rock/pop music - if it's decently reproduced and in the right venue.
We saw The Illegal Eagles a while ago and I'd bet that (on a pure decibel scale) they were every bit as loud as last night's disco. But the sound quality/balance was impeccable and we were in a biggish theatre with great acoustics - my ears were not ringing even after the best part of three hours.
Last night was a small pub room, the music was horribly distorted (all treble and crash sounds) and my ears said "you need to leave now before real damage is done" after less than three minutes - let alone three hours.
Even hiding at the very far end of the pub, around a corner from the bar area, it was simply painful to listen to - the DJ couldn't see the problem - but then he was comfortably inside his headphones all night whilst he damaged everyone else's hearing...

He's been my brother for sixty years......I know that brothers are rarely right.....though I could see that the scheming look on my face as I wondered how to pull some plugs would make me look like our mother....
I did answer the phone tonight to a voice shouting....HELLO GNESS....THOUGHT I WOULD GIVE YOU A SHOUT!
It wasn't a generation thing because many of the younger folk were unhappy about it too.....the little area for dancing was empty because there was no rhythm to dance to.....
I didn't see a dj, Alba......the landlady seemed to be in charge of some sort of music and lighting system....but there may have been somebody I couldn't see......I was in the corner as far away as I could get.....
Not to worry......my big birthday isn't far off....the son will have an evening with Joan Baez...... :-)

No, Sandy.....it wasn't music and it certainly wasn't background....
To be with family...bantering and chatting about times gone by.....telling the son's girlfriend about his childhood and quirky ways......that's fun....catching up with some not seen for a while...that's wonderful....
Sitting looking at each other and resorting to texting....that's a shame..... :-)

And I'm sorry you're feeling sorry for yourself, Sandy....really...x
I wanted to chat with the kids who'd traveled many miles for the event......the lad who I haven't been able to speak to since he had a stroke.....
Background music.....chatting about the son's life....sharing memories with those who have known him since birth.....listening to him confess the things I didn't know he had done in his teens.....that would have been my ideal evening.
You're right...I did asked numerous people many times if the music could be turned down a little I was told no......mind you....most of it had to be done in signs so maybe they thought I was the crazy old dear at the do..... :-)
