If people want to identify as a different sex, it doesn't really affect me, so (whilst I may think it is a bit nuts) if that's what they want to do, they can fill their boots as far as I'm concerned.
BUT....
SP - surely you must see ,and accept, that Rachel McKinnon has an unfair advantage in racing against normal women. Don't you?

Well yes I think most of the 'man on the street' would agree with you, after all it's obviously unfair but this type of topic comes up repeatedly on AB and unless you are capable of discussing it in incredibly intellectual prose there's no point discussing it at all.

At the end of a verrrry long day, it's all just mince.
There was a time when this stuff was pretty niche but now instant mass communication dumps this sort of tripe on impressionable young folk and it literally goes viral.
They're infected and there's no cure for stupid.
The only thing I have left to figure out is who's making money from this latest fashion.

“Saying that the science behind gender identification and how it impacts on sporting ability is ‘mumbo jumbo’ cannot be the basis for ongoing analysis and discussion.”
I agree. But there is no science behind gender identification in the proposed amendments to the Gender Recognition Act (GRA). When those amendments are enacted all that will be needed is for a man to say “I now identify as female”.
“I think that most people will be thinking that there are very few people with sufficient athletic ability who would want to pibcliclu start the transitioning process in order to win at a given sport,”
You suffer a misapprehension, sp. There will be no “transitioning process” (see above). I cannot say how the IOC will cope with this but certainly as far as any domestic sporting competitions go the situation will be quite clear: a man can simply say “I am now female” and he must be allowed to compete in female events. There will be no testosterone tests, no chromosome investigations (for the precise reason for the GRA amendments is to remove those encumbrances). It will be no use the sporting organisations refusing to accept gender self-identifications. Their rules will not trump national legislation. It really will be blokes (who identify as females) taking part in women’s competitions.

I'm about to be flippant to make a point.....
I go to my local swimming baths every Monday night, and there's an absolutely stunning woman who matches me length for length and, frankly, I'd love to see her get changed.
Therefore, under the Gender Recognition Act, can I self-identify as female between 8pm and 9pm on a Monday evening so I can use the ladies changing rooms?
And if not, why not?
There are times when the law is simply wrong - surely the GRA is one of them. I can envisage lots of situations that the law hasn't anticipated, so expect to see absurd situations going forwards....
