//Churchill's opinion...was shaped rather heavily by his obvious fondness for our Imperial past... it's also difficult to see how exactly one can claim to be forward-looking whilst hearkening back to the "glory days" of Empire//
Might not preserving our ancestral liberties and sovereign independence have been a consideration? And ought it not be now, Jim? You can understand (and accept as legitimate) the aspirations of, say, Scotland, for independence from "Westminster", can't you, even if in this instance, like me, you disagree with the nationalists?

I know what democracy means too. Presumably, since we disagree, we can't both be right. That invites a discussion, does it not?
I have no intention of trying to fool you, or anyone else -- least of all myself. Obviously, my first hope is that we've come to agree on this, but failing that, I would at least welcome it if you stopped going on about how I am apparently trying to "fool" people. It's completely wrong.

I think the difference, v-e, is that the past of Empire saw the UK have sovereign independence at the *head* of a particular group of nations, rather than on a more level footing. In his later career Churchill certainly tried to keep the UK at the top of the world stage, and was trying to make good use of this too (was he not one of the earliest advocates for global nuclear disarmament, for trying to end the Cold War?), but it turned out to be an unrealistic aim.
