I am taking advanced higher english this year and for part of the course I have to write a dissertation on three books that have a common theme, or are all set in a certain place or era. I am finding it really hard to decide on what books to read, there is so much choice!! Any help would be gratefully appreciated...... thanks. (I am particularly interested in travel fiction books, I loved "The Beach" by Alex Garland, so if you have any suggestions of similar books I would also be grateful.)
You could type 'Travel fiction books' in Google and see what you get, although I expect you've already done that... What about Rudyard Kipling books? i think they're all set in India when it still belonged to the United Kingdom? All will be classics... it IS quite difficult actually! I'll have a think....
Have you looked at some of the black women writers from the Harlem Renaissance? Zore Neale Hurston's 'Their Eyes Were Watching God', along with Alice Walker's 'The Colour Purple' would be a good starting point, and then you could go on to contrast them with, perhaps, Theodore Dreiser's 'Sister Carrie'? All three deal with the treatment of women in the early twentieth century, and were set books on one of my university modules.
