A petition has been launched to offer Ireland membership of the UK after Brexit as a way of solving the impasse over the border. It currently has 2,000 signatures, up from 700 yesterday.

This comes a few week after John Humphrys, a host of the Today programme, made the same suggestion in an interview with Ireland's Europe Minister on Radio 4:

Full 10 minute interview here, for those interested:

Why on earth is this deluded suggestion gaining any traction whatsoever? Does anyone here plan on signing?

Just explain to them that it would mean the UK having to join the EU again ... :-)
It’s mostly people in N Ireland, to my shame, who’ve signed by the look of it. Top of the league being East Antrim - home of arch Brexiter Sammy (“does my bum tan?”) Wilson and East Belfast.
Oooo....that's cruel, Ich.......aren't they in enough of a confused tizz as it is without our gentle humour adding to it?... ;-)
As I said I’d like to think this was the brainchild of someone with a sense of humour. If only I could be sure ...
As for Sammy Wilson, sorry Sammy but I can’t get that picture from the Sunday News front page all those years ago out of my head.
And never will ...
Had to google that one, Ich....is that really him and his bum in the whispering grass in 1996?
Well I fear it is guess. Although I’m not going to check it out again :-)
Gness !
It might be better than 'No deal !
It would make far more sense if N.I. joined the Republic - and good riddance! there has been nothing but deaths and trouble for a century.
More people have died during that time in proportion to the population - (civilians, British soldiers and police), than in the WWII blitz on the British mainland.

Yes, and we finally have a peace settlement which brought all that to an end. Why jeopadise it?
