I Assume This Is A Scam...

I have just had a call from an unidentifiable number (00165619231292) telling me that my internet line will be disconnected in the next few hours because of some "compromise". I was invited to "Press 1 to disconnect now or Press 2 to speak to someone". I did neither but just put the phone down.
The reason I answered in the first place was that I am expecting a call and my wife saw the number on caller display and said that it "looked like that Manchester number you're expecting".
Does anyone have any experience of this number, or any comments?

I often get that message left on my answering machine. It's a standard scam message.

001 numbers originate from either the USA or Canada but the number has probably been spoofed anyway.

These scammers are many steps ahead of the pointless bodies appointed to police these things.I really don't know what the point of the existence of the Telephone Preference Service really is,perhaps someone could enlighten me.

The TPS is right up there with the alleged facility to block scam emails on Outlook, Grumpy.

I have also received a call like this and hung up, so has a few people around here. I'm with TPS and they have managed to block most of these nuisance calls to my number but very rarely one will get past them. Just hang up.

Prior to the introduction of TPS, some people were receiving dozens of sales calls (for double-glazing, solar energy, home improvements insurance policies , etc, etc) every single day, seven days per week, often going late into the evening. TPS has eliminated all such calls from responsible UK-based companies but scam calls almost always originate from overseas (even if the number is shown as being UK-based), so it would be unreasonable to expect TPS to be able to filter out such calls.

Without TPS you could be receiving hundreds of sales calls every week, Grumpy01. Don't knock it!

Thanks for all your very quick replies. I suspected that this was the case but as I almost invariably ignore these numbers in the belief that they are a scam it is good to get confirmations that this is the case.

If you Google 'who called me' and put in the number, it shows how many people have complained etc, so you can see if it is a known scam. You can report such calls but it is a bit if a rigamarole and you can only do it if you spoke to the caller and have the name of the company.

I had - we have been picking up abnormal use on your computer
and I said - oh no that is awful!
and she rang off !

the other one I had kept hanging on for at least four minutes - switching the ctr on - oh it has crashed! you must be right and so on ....

oh and then convulsively stabbing the numeric pad on the telephone and saying - you are right it doesnt work at all! as it bloops in her ear to tell her I am not even on the right machine ....

I too had the same call today, put the phone down and rang my phone and broadband provider, they know all about it and have now provided me with a facility whereby I can block nuisance calls in future.
