If I had a big win on the lottery (so that I'd got some money to 'play with, where it wouldn't matter too much if I lost it) I'd most definitely look at investing in one or more cryptocurrencies. However I'd probably go for one of the newer ones, such as Litecoin:

They're not only used for dodgy dealings. Many 'mainstream' traders, such as Microsoft and Expedia, now accept bitcoin payments. Further, some businesses are now turning away from accepting debit/credit cards, which incur hefty banking charges, in favour of accepting cryptocurrencies. e.g. the Pembury Tavern in London doesn't take cards but it does accept both Bitcoin and Litecoin payments.

I bought two grand's worth about five years ago and held them for a couple of years but those were very flat years and the currency didn't gain much. In fact the price went down for much of that period. When it did rise again I decided to sell and made a grand profit, which isn't a bad return of course, but I daren't calculate what they would be worth had I held on to them.
My OH bought two hundred pounds worth of Dash coins a couple of years back which are now worth about 30 grand. She could have sold out a month or so ago for about 60. 30 grand would be nice, but hardly life-changing so she thinks we should hold out this time as they cost next to nothing, and see if the sum does get life-changing.
