rewire a 60's bungalow

Where can I find out how to rewire a 60's bungalow. What is involved i.e. what do you do about the old wiring. Do you rip it out , or leave it and just put new cable in?

If you go to Wickes they have a free "How To" leaflet on rewiring a house. It gives very clear, step-by-step detailed instructions and good diagrams which are easy to follow.

As to what you do about the old wiring, I would say rip it out wherever you can but in some places this will obviously cause lots of mess (under plaster and floorboards etc.) If you leave it in it shouldn't be a problem once it's isolated and cut back (in the box) apart from in the future it might be difficult to tell whether a particular cable is live or not, as I think a 60's bungalow will have grey cable instead of black. (Hope you understand the last bit, what I mean is, in our house, the old, unused cable is black and perished, so when I come across some I know I can cut it out without fear. But I think the cable colour changed to grey around the 60s, so if you leave it in, in the future it may be difficult to tell if it was "new" or not.

Open Yellow Pages at "E", find electricians who specialise in house rewires, pay them to do the job properly.

Never try to rewire your house by yourself, best to contact a qualified sparky, the electrical regulations has just changed in this country to comply with european standards red is no longer live and black is no longer neutral best thing to do is the said above.
