Usman Khan was given an indeterminate sentence in 2012 but this was overturned on appeal - it was argued the convicted in that case should be incentivised to demonstrate they can safely be released, and such a decision is better placed with the parole board. thus determinate sentences were substituted with automatic release at the 50% point.
