Nan/Gran

I know this isn't really the Right Section and it's a Strange Question but what is the difference between a Nan and a Gran....??

Purely preference, one Gran will say Nan makes her sound older and Nan will say Gran makes her sound older.

traditionally your nan is your dads mam, while your gran is your mams mam.

my mum refuses to be gran, so she is Nanny, and my mum in law is gran, as she is a lot older than my mum!

Hmmm. I had two Nanas, Little Nana ('cause she wasn't very big), and Big Nana ('cause she was tall). I didn't really know Little Nana as she died when I was five, but Big Nana was a significant person in my life until her death in the 1980s.

Nowadays, my mum is Nana to my boys and hubby's mum is Granny. Nana is much more with it and dynamic - a real good laugh - whereas Granny is self-pitying old lady reminiscent of Hyacinth Bucket on Prozac.

My eldest is insisting on my being 'Gran' when he and his wife eventually reproduce, but I've told him no-way. I don't want to be Nana, either. I think the Kumars call their granny 'Ummy' or some such, which would suit me fine.

it is actually a demographic preference, In some areas of the Country they use predominently Nan or Nana, especially in the Southern Counties, and in the North it is predominently Grandma. According to the Retail Greeting card Industry.

i call my grandmother my Nana, but i have a friend who calls hers Nanima & her grandfather Bhajee not sure where this comes from, maybe from south africa as she is from there.

there is no tradition with this - nan and gran can be either of your parents parents.

i will be a nan because thats what i called mine, what i will reach my kids to call my parents, and what my parents called theirs.

nan is very northern though.

It's regional, I think. I called both my grandmas 'grandma'.

I don`t think it`s a regional thing at all. It`s a personal preference. When my 1st grandson was born I was asked what I wanted to be called & being Welsh, I chose the Welsh for grandmother. The other grandmother chose Nana. I know of Nans, nannys, gran, granma & all live near me.

I call my mum's mum, Grandma. I call my dad's mum DeeDee, she refused to be called anything similar to gran, nan, etc. and picked this off the top of her head!

My mum is Nanny to my niece though. :o)

Seems there is not really a Standard Answer!! I am kind of glad about that though as I thought I was really strange thinking that it was weird that some People were called Nan and some Gran!!
As I haven't got either (*Sniff*) I shall have to make sure I think carefully what my Mum is called if I ever have Kids!!!!

I have a gran who is my mums mum and a nana whos my dads mum.

grans do give more pockey money lol well at least mine did. Not now as im older. Nana is also older.

my dads mum is grandma and my mums mum is gran, we live in the midlands and it varies here according to family preference, but as we are in the middle I suppose it couldnt really be explained by the north south divide
