What is a doula?

I've read about 'doulas' in pregnancy articles - what exactly do they do?

(Usually) an older woman experienced in childbirth who assists a mother-to-be through the birthing process. It's the equivalent of a having a friend who really knows what they're doing, holding your hand during labour! I don't think they necessarily have medical training, but are there to give support and advice.
