I have a silver tabby cat. His mum was a persian but his dad is 'unknown'. Lots of people compliment us about him and many have mistaken him for a british shorthair. He of course doesnt have papers and we have no intention of showing him but it has raised my curiosity to what is exactly a pedigree silver tabby? Is it a breed and was he and his litter brothers and sisters ' freaks'? bar one they were all silver tabbies.

Silver tabby is a colour not a breed. Many breeds can have silver tabby colouring. I've got one and he's a Maine **** breed. It's because somewhere in the genetics of either parent, there was a silver tabby (the father in my case). Some breeders specialise in producing particular colours and they can do this by using this knowledge and selectively breeding.
