What's the deal with returning a product purchased online when the product tags have been removed? Does it still fall within the 'cooling-off period' if it's been used?

No unless you got it from QVC
I think it would depend on the nature of the item and the reason for the return.
My guess is if it's just a change of mind it's unlikely to still be covered, the retailer must value customer goodwill to a very large extent to take back used and then returned. But still worth asking.

If there is a fault then you don't need the cooling off period, depending on how long you've had it, the retailer or manufacturer has a responsibility to change/fix/whatever.
The various laws allow you to examine the goods bought online, over the phone, by post etc as you would in a shop. Any more than that and they cannot be returned unless not as described, faulty or poor quality
Do you still have the tags to reattach
That's nasty, calmck. Somebody would buy it believing it to be new and box fresh. Yuk
Perhaps you could be a little more explicit saying what you bought and what you did with it.
Was it a product bought from a [private seller, online merchant or a company like Amazon? How was it described?
If my used you mean worn then a big NO!
