The best way is to put it in a small saucepan full of water, and boil it until you can see a tiny crack form in parts of it.

Its difficult to give a time limit as to how long it should be boiled, but if you see it crack, then you are sure its done.

I always wait for the water to boil in the pan before putting the eggs in as I don't want to putt the eggs in cold water and then have to stand and watch the pot for it to boil and then time it from there... far too much hassle.

I prick the eggs because that prevents them from cracking when you dip them in boiling water. I lower them into the water with a table spoon so they slowly get adjusted to the heat and for soft boiled I give them about 5-6 mins for large eggs (6-7 for those ones called BIG) and about 10-11 for hardboiled.
